El Colibrí de Pico Ancho es un ave colorida cuyo rango limita al norte con Arizona. Los Colibrís de Pico Ancho que anidan en Arizona son aves migratorias; dentro de su rango de reproducción, solo sus poblaciones en México son residentes permanentes todo el año.

Hábitat
Matorrales en lugares áridos, bosques abiertos de hoja caduca, lugares semi-desérticos, y otros hábitats áridos.
Alimentación
Se alimenta del néctar de las flores cuando está suspendido frente a ellas, y caza insectos mientras vuela.
Comportamiento
Se aparece por el suroeste de Estados Unidos, en donde solo son visitantes, y desde el sur-oeste de México hasta el istmo de Tehuantepec. Su temporada de reproducción usualmente coincide con el peak de floraciones de algún área en particular.
Anidación
La hembra construye el nido en algún lugar protegido de un matorral o árbol; ponen hasta 2 huevos por temporada.

Descripción del adulto
- Es un colibrí pequeño. Su cola es abierta y mellada, su pico es rojo con una punta negra, y su espalda verde. El macho tiene azul en la garganta y verde en el pecho. La hembra tiene partes bajas grises, una línea blanca sobre el ojo, y un parche oscuro cerca de su oído.
Descripción de los jóvenes
- Los jóvenes se parecen a las hembras adultas, pero con franjas amarillentas en las plumas de sus partes altas.

Los Colibríes de Pico Ancho jóvenes y hembras adultas se parecen mucho a los Zafiros de Orejas Blancas. Se diferencian por el parche del Colibrí de Pico Ancho, que es grisáceo en vez de negro. Además, el centro de la garganta del Colibrí de Pico Ancho es claramente gris, y no con puntos como el del Zafiro de Orejas Blancas.

- Como otros colibríes, el Colibrí de Pico Ancho consume aproximadamente 1.6 a 1.7 veces su peso en néctar durante un día.
- La rutina típica de cortejo es con el macho suspendido a aproximadamente 1 pie (33 cm) sobre la hembra, y luego haciendo arcos alrededor de ella, como un péndulo.
