Hábitat
Bosques abiertos o semi-abiertos, bosques reforestados y matorrales.
Alimentación
Insectos, frutas, semillas, y ocasionalmente huevos de otras aves y lagartos.
Comportamiento
Usualmente se les ve picoteando insectos en la corteza de árboles, explorando agujeros en madera muerta, escalando por ramas, o atrapando insectos voladores.
Anidación
Anida en agujeros de ramas y troncos, vivos o muertos.

Descripción del adulto
- Carpintero de tamaño medio-grande.
- Espalda rayada de blanquinegro.
- Color naranja-amarillo detrás del cuello.
- Rabadilla blanca.
- El macho tiene una gorra roja.
Descripción de los jóvenes
- Los jóvenes son similares a los adultos, aunque más pálidos y con un rayado más sutil en corona y pecho; tienen algo de color solo en la nuca y cerca de sus orificios. Sus ojos son color café.

- Se le diferencia del Carpintero de Carolina porque este último tiene la nuca y orificios nasales rojos, y en el caso de la hembra también su corona. Además, el rayado de su espalda es blanco, sin plumas negras cerca del centro de su cola.
- El Carpintero del Desierto por otra parte, tiene la cabeza y nuca completamente grises, plumas del centro de la cola rayadas, y finas barras negras en su cola.
¿Sabías que…?
- El Carpintero Cheje es un conjunto de 4 sub-especies de distinto tamaño, cantidad de rayado en la cola, y de distintos colores en su nuca, orificios nasales, y barriga; mientras que la nuca de un espécimen encontrado en Texas y la mayoría de México es de color amarillo-naranja, en la Península del Yucatán ésta es roja, y solo naranja más al sur. En el pasado, sus 4 formas fueron consideradas distintas especies.
- El Carpintero Cheje come tantas frutas y nueces como insectos. En verano en algunas zonas de Texas, su cara puede verse con manchas purpura luego de comer los frutes del nopal.
