La Tortolita Cola Larga es una Paloma de áreas áridas, que se ha vuelto un residente habitual en áreas urbanas del suroeste de Estados Unidos. Ha expandido su territorio de reproducción tanto hacia al norte como hacia al sur, aunque siempre asociada a centros urbanos.

Hábitat

Vive siempre en los mismos hábitats durante el año. Principalmente cerca de centros urbanos, como villas, pueblos, ciudades y granjas. Se alimenta en el suelo, tanto en granjas como en áreas abiertas. Anida en matorrales y pequeños árboles. Ocasionalmente, se puede ver cerca de cursos de agua o ríos, mas no de forma permanente en zonas rivereñas.

Alimentación

Granos, maleza y semillas de pastos.

Comportamiento

La Tortolita cola Larga es sensible a climas fríos y usa una variedad de estrategias para sobrevivir a ellos. Sufren de hipotermia (5-12 °C por debajo de su temperatura normal), especialmente durante periodos fríos con escasez de agua y alimento. Para conservar el calor, tiene un comportamiento conocido como “pirámide de descanso”, el cual consiste en 5 a 10 palomas que se agrupan en un lugar soleado una sobre otra, alcanzando de 2 a 3 niveles. Su expansión hacia el norte es continua, pero está limitada por esta sensibilidad al frio.

Anidación

En algunas partes de su rango, esta paloma se reproduce casi todo el año; deposita dos huevos en un nido suelto y con forma de copa. Pueden usar el mismo nido en más de una ocasión, el cual se vuelve más resistente en el tiempo en la medida que las heces van acumulándose.

Su tamaño pequeño la distingue del resto de las palomas de Norteamérica, con la única excepción su género: Columbina. Para diferenciarla de otras palomas de este género, fíjate que esta tortolita tiene la cola relativamente más larga, mellada, y con blanco en sus costados. Además, es la única paloma del género que tiene plumaje escamado. Su llamado también es distintivo: “ju’pu” o “jur’pu”, con “no-joupes” esporádicos.

La Tortolita Cola Larga tiene un extraño comportamiento conocido como “pirámide de descanso”. Consiste en unos cuantos individuos que se amontonan siguiendo la luz del sol, y algunas de ellas se sientan en la espalda de otras. Estas pirámides pueden ser de hasta 3 niveles y con 12 individuos en total.
La Tortolita Cola Larga más longeva registrada tenía 10 años y 10 meses de edad. Fue capturada y luego asesinada por un gato en Texas.
