Comportamiento
El macho a menudo ofrece una mariposa o algún otro insecto llamativo a la hembra para iniciar la copulación. Durante la temporada de reproducción, el macho hace poses espectaculares, revoloteando de 10 a 30 metros por sobre las copas de los árboles, mientras además canta. Se posa y espera sobre alguna rama abierta, identificando presas y persiguiéndolas. A veces, atrapa moscas durante el vuelo, ya sea cerca del suelo o hasta 10 metros sobre él.
Anidación
El nido es una copa suelta de ramas, pastos y fibras, recubierta con vello, plumas y cabello. Usualmente, prefiere alguna rama horizontal con forma de tenedor para anidar, que este a unos 2.5 a 6 metros por sobre el suelo.

- Atrapamoscas pequeño.
- El macho tiene partes bajas y cabeza de color rojo brillante o rojo anaranjado.
- La hembra es pálida y café-grisáceo arriba, con rojo apagado debajo de la cola, y rayado blanco en el pecho.

- Su corona, parta baja de la cara, y partes bajas son de color escarlata brillante. Sus partes bajas, nuca, y delineado del ojo es café-negro. Alas y cola son de un oscuro café con negro. Las plumas exteriores de su cola pueden tener bordes blancos; la punta de la cola es de color blanco borroso.
Descripción de la hembra
- Las partes altas son café-grisáceo. Las partes bajas son blancas cerca de la garganta, y se vuelven de color salmón o naranja pálido cerca de la cola. Su pecho, costados, y flancos son rayados de café con gris. Tiene una ceja pálida y una línea gris que pasa por el ojo. Las alas y cola son café-grisáceo. Algunas pueden tener un poco de color rosa en la corona o pecho.
Descripción de los jóvenes
- Los jóvenes tienen la espalda escamada con negro-grisáceo, las partes bajas y plumas exteriores de la cola blancas, y puntos oscuros por todo el pecho. Los machos jóvenes se parecen a las hembras adultas, pero con un color rojo más acentuado debajo de la cola y en sus flancos, y una cantidad algo variable puntos rojo pálido. Las hembras jóvenes son similares a las adultas, pero con amarillo en vez de rojo debajo de la cola.

El Papamoscas Llanero tiene tintes rojizos en los costados y cola, pero no tiene el pecho rayado ni blanco como el Papamoscas Cardenalito.

- Durante la reproducción, el Papamoscas Cardenalito macho pasa cerca del 90% de su tiempo posado.
- 12 sub-especies de Papamoscas Cardenalito han sido identificadas, incluidas razas que se van haciendo más oscuras desde el oeste de Perú hasta Chile. Tanto machos como hembras de estas variedades son completamente oscuros, y solo algunos machos tienen un poco de rojo en la cabeza, y solo algunas hembras tienen un poco de rosa debajo de la cola. Aproximadamente, la mitad de los Papamoscas Cardenalitos en Lima, Perú, son de esta variedad más oscura, aunque su población disminuye gradualmente yendo hacia el sur.
