La típica Paloma Doméstica es de color azul grisáceo con dos bandas negras en las alas. Sin embargo, puede que veas bandadas de ellas de un solo color, con manchas, pálidas, o de color rojo óxido. Traídas a Norteamérica desde Europa a principios de 1600, las Palomas Domésticas anidan en edificios y alféizares. En el campo, las Palomas Domésticas anidan en graneros, silos de torre, debajo de puentes, y precipicios naturales.

Áreas urbanas, agrícolas, y precipicios rocosos. A veces se congregan en parques urbanos donde la gente les da de comer.
Alimentación
Las Palomas Domésticas comen semillas, frutas, y de vez en cuando, invertebrados. Comen de buena gana comida que la gente les ha dejado a propósito o por accidente, incluyendo migas de pan y comida desechada.
Comportamiento
Las Palomas Domésticas picotean la comida del suelo, y toman agua colocando su pico en el agua, usándolo como un pitillo. Cuando amenazan a un rival, las palomas puede que inclinen la cabeza, arrullen, e inflen su garganta, mientras caminan en círculos. Cuando el macho corteja a su pareja, él hace una reverencia a la hembra, arrulla, infla su garganta, y camina en círculos alrededor de ella. Tanto el macho como la hembra se acomodan las plumas mutuamente, y el macho puede que agarre el pico de la hembra y le de de comer como parte de su cortejo. Cuando están listos para aparearse, la hembra se agacha y el macho salta sobre su espalda. El macho le lleva a la hembra de a una ramita o tallo a la vez para construir el nido. Él empolla los huevos desde la media mañana hasta el final de la tarde; el turno de ella empieza al final de la tarde, y continúa durante la noche hasta le media mañana. Ambos padres participan de la crianza de los pichones, y los alimentan con un liquido lechoso que ambos secretan de las paredes internas del buche.
Anidación
Durante la construcción del nido, la hembra se sienta en él y construye una base delgada con paja, tallos, y ramitas que el macho le trae. Las Palomas Domésticas usan sus nidos muchas veces, y no sacan del nido la materia fecal de los pichones como hacen muchas otras aves. Esto ocasiona que con el tiempo ,el nido débil y delgado se convierta en un nido de consistencia más sólida, muchas veces conteniendo huevos y pichones muertos momificados.

Tamaño y Apariencia
Las Palomas Domésticas son más grandes y acuerpadas que Las Palomas Huilotas. Además, tienen un cuerpo robusto, cabeza pequeña, y patas cortas. Las alas son anchas pero puntiagudas, y la cola es ancha y redonda.
Colores del Ave
Son aves de colores variados, pero la mayoría son de color gris azulado; tienen dos rayas negras en las alas, y la punta de la cola negra. La mayoría de las Palomas Domésticas tienen plumas iridiscentes en el cuello. A veces, también tienen puntos negros en las alas.

Las Palomas de Collar son casi completamente grises, y tienen patas y picos amarillos; además, tienen un collar blanco en la parte de atrás del cuello. Las Palomas Turcas son café claro grisáceo, y tienen una mancha negra en la parte de atrás del cuello. Las Palomas Huilotas son de color café grisáceo, y tienen manchas negras en las alas. Además, son más esbeltas y tienen una cola larga y puntiaguda. La Paloma de Ala Blanca tiene parches blancos en las alas que se pueden ver cuando está volando y cuando no. Los parches parecen bandas blancas en el borde de las alas.
¿Sabías que…?
- Tanto los machos como las hembras de la Paloma Doméstica producen “leche de paloma”, un liquido rico en proteína y grasa para alimentar a los pichones.
- Las palomas mensajeras son de la misma especie que las Palomas Domésticas; son capaces de encontrar su lugar de origen aún estando a miles de millas de distancia. Es por esto, que se les ha utilizado en las guerras para llevar mensajes a través de los territorios enemigos.
